The skills schools don’t teach: What children really learn while growing up ft. Pranit Shilimkar

Some of the most important lessons a child learns don’t come from textbooks, they come from curiosity, activities and practice. A fitness influencer and father, Pranit Shilimkar understands them and notes them down.

As parents, we naturally want our children to do well in school, score good marks, and build successful careers. But I believe our role goes far beyond academics. Some of the most important skills in life are never taught in a classroom. Communication, emotional intelligence, resilience, problem-solving, and decision-making are not developed through textbooks alone. They are built through experiences and everyday moments.

A child learns confidence by trying something new, resilience by losing a game, empathy by helping someone else, and responsibility by making choices and understanding their consequences. A family vacation, playing a sport, meeting new people, making mistakes, and learning from failure often teach lessons that stay with us far longer than anything we memorise for an exam. Mihira and I often talk about how much children learn simply by observing their parents. In their early years especially, parents are their first role models. Children don’t always do what we tell them to do. More often, they do what they see us doing consistently.
